Blast Theory is renowned internationally as one of the most adventurous artists' groups using interactive media, creating groundbreaking new forms of performance art that mixes audiences across the internet, live performance and digital broadcasting. Led by Matt Adams, Ju Row Farr and Nick Tandavanitj, the group's work confronts a media saturated world in which popular culture rules. In recent years the group has been increasingly widely acknowledged as innovators in games. The group's recent game projects have probed the fundamental laws of games and of play, posing questions about the boundaries between games and the real world that also have important ramifications for art, performance and virtual worlds. The artists have contributed to debates about the development of games as an art form and how games may be conceptually, intellectually and emotionally demanding while also engaging a wide audience. This year, ANTI – Contemporary Art Festival proudly presents Blast Theorys´s Riders Spoke. Rider Spoke is a work for cyclists. A games console mounted on the handlebars of your bike guides you as you glide through the streets of Kuopio. You explore the city by bike, looking for places to hide recorded messages and find digital treasures others have hidden. Supported by GPS technology the evening unfolds on the screen in front of you and on city that surrounds you. Digital and urban space combine to create an exciting, innovative and evocative ride into the heart of the city. Your companion on the journey, the handlebar mounted screen, uses wi-fi hotspots to show you where other players have hidden recordings and places where you can stop and make your own recordings. The interface employs imagery drawn from Mexican votive painting, sailor tattoos and heraldry: swallows flutter across the screen to show available hiding places, prefab houses indicate places where others have hidden. It’s all out there to find – let’s go hunting!
Workshop I Wednesday 28.9.2011 from 9am to 12pm Step behind the scenes of how Blast Theory creates their internationally renowned interactive artworks. Workshop II Thursday 29.9.2011 from 9am to 12pm Blast Theory artist Nick Tandavanitj leads this workshop that explores how Rider Spoke was created. You will have hands on experience of working through some of the technologies involved and how Rider Spoke uses Wi-Fi to create a 'map' of the city. You will also create some content for Rider Spoke and think about questions that you would ask.
