DOCUMENTATION SEMINAR, Sept 28, 2006
The international seminar at the ANTI – Contemporary Art Festival deals with the documentation of the arts. The lecturers of the seminar include a researcher of contemporary art, Helena Erkkilä, an Italian photo artist, Manuel Vason, and a British editor-in-chief Martin Hargreaves. In addition, the seminar is supplemented by the artist speakers, dance artist Reijo Kela and photo artist Juha Allan Ekholm. These lectures and presentations of the artists will bring up various documentation-related working methods, challenges and problems but also various viewpoints about confronting and dealing with these issues.
Program:
10.00–11.00 Helena Erkkilä Changing ideals and practises in the documentation of the performance art*
During her lecture, Helena Erkkilä will present examples of the Finnish performance art in the 1980’s and she will discuss some historical ideologies of documentation. Furthermore, she will also take a look at the expanded field of the performance art in the 2000’s and the new functions and possibilities of documentation. Erkkilä has done research, for example, on the Finnish performance art and she has discussed the problematics of the temporary arts in her essay in a publication of the Finnish National Gallery, Katoava taide (Vanishing art)(1999).
11.00–12.30 Manuel Vason Pure Collaboration
Manuel Vason will discuss the problematics concerning the documentation of the live performances and his own ways to approach and solve these problems as a photographer by presenting the making and various processes of the Pure Collaboration work series. Since 1999, Vason has been closely working with a number of live artists in order to present the momentariness through photography and the real character of the works/performances. In his works, Vason has focused on presenting the possibilities of the bodily expression and he has been working with some of the world’s best known live art artists such as, for example, Ron Athey and Franco B.

13.30–14.45 Reijo Kela; artist statement *
Reijo Kela will present at the seminar his documentary 365 päivää - Reijo Kelan videopäiväkirja 1999 (365 days – Reijo Kela video diary 1999) which was awarded at the Tampere Short Film Festival. 14.45–15.45 Martin Hargreaves “Our disappearance is already here” (Derrida)
The lecture of Martin Hargreaves will discuss the process of documenting the body and the movement. Furthermore, Hargreaves is the editor-in-chief of the art magazine Dance Theatre Journal and the director of the M.A. program European Dance Theatre Practice at the Laban Centre in London.

16.15–16.45 Juha Allan Ekholm; artist lecture The second chance of experiencing
Subordinate to the work, the purpose of documentation is to store what has happened. Or is it actually so? REPLAY is a project which aims at presenting a city space with the means of photo art seen through a live role play introduced at the ANTI -festival in 2004. Simultaneously, it builds a bridge between two festivals by creating a new art experience and new interpretations.
